A short drive lifts you into the hills. Bellapais Abbey, about fifteen minutes away, is the finest Gothic ruin on the island, set in a village with sweeping coast views. Higher still, St Hilarion Castle clings to a mountain ridge with some of the widest views in Cyprus — a steeper, longer visit best saved for a clear morning.
Museums and indoor sights
Girne's museums are small, characterful and handily central. The Shipwreck Museum, inside Girne Castle, displays a 4th-century BC Greek merchant ship — among the oldest ever found — still holding its cargo of millstones and olive-oil amphorae. In the old town, the Icon Museum occupies the former Archangel Michael church and gathers religious icons from around the Kyrenia region, while the Folk Art Museum sits on the harbour quay in an old Venetian house.
