Bellapais Abbey

A Gothic abbey in ruins above Kyrenia, wrapped in a hillside village of cypress trees and sea views — one of the most beautiful spots in North Cyprus.

Why visit

The 13th-century abbey of Bellapais is the finest Gothic monument in Cyprus. Its cloister, refectory and shaded courtyard look out over the coast far below, and even in ruin the arches keep their elegance.

The village around it — made famous by Lawrence Durrell's memoir Bitter Lemons — is a lovely place to slow down, with terraces and cafés spilling down the hillside.

Make a morning of it

Pair the abbey with a coffee or an early lunch in the village square beneath the famous 'Tree of Idleness'. Mornings are cooler and quieter, before the coach tours arrive from the coast.
