St Hilarion Castle
A fairytale castle draped over a mountain ridge above Kyrenia, its battlements climbing to some of the widest views in Cyprus.
Why visit
St Hilarion is the best-preserved of the three crusader castles along the Kyrenia range, and the most dramatic. It climbs the mountainside in three linked wards, and is often said to have inspired the castle in Disney's Snow White.
From the upper towers on a clear day you can see the entire Kyrenia coast spread out below, and sometimes the mountains of the Turkish mainland across the sea.
Before you go
- Wear proper shoes — there are many steep, uneven steps
- Bring water; there is little shade near the summit
- Choose a clear morning for the views and to beat the midday heat
Good to know

Is St Hilarion a hard climb?
Reaching the upper castle involves a fair amount of steep, uneven stepping. Comfortable shoes and water make it much easier.
