The destination

Kyrenia,jewel of thenorth coast

Avenue Hotel sits in the historic heart of Girne (Kyrenia), the most beautiful harbour town on the north coast of Cyprus. Cradled between the Beşparmak mountains and the turquoise Mediterranean, Kyrenia pairs a centuries-old castle and horseshoe harbour with quiet beaches, Crusader ruins and long, sun-warm days. From our door, the sea, the old town and the mountains are all within easy reach.

The old harbour& the castle

Kyrenia's horseshoe harbour is the soul of the town — fishing boats, waterfront cafés and, guarding its mouth, the great Kyrenia Castle. Byzantine in origin and rebuilt by the Venetians, it shelters the Shipwreck Museum and one of the oldest trading vessels ever raised from the sea. It is a five-minute walk from Avenue.

Beaches &turquoise sea

The coast either side of Kyrenia is a run of clear, shallow bays. Escape and Camelot beaches offer soft sand and calm swimming within a short drive, while protected Alagadi (Turtle Beach) is a summer nesting ground for loggerhead and green sea turtles. The Mediterranean here stays warm from May well into October.

Mountains, castles& abbeys

Behind the town rise the Beşparmak (Pentadaktylos) mountains, crowned by the fairytale St Hilarion Castle and, in the foothills, the Gothic ruins of Bellapais Abbey looking out to sea. Winding roads, olive groves and mountain villages make the hinterland as rewarding as the coast — all within a twenty-minute drive of the hotel.

The old town& a good table

Step out and the old town is yours: narrow lanes, a lively market, boutiques and family tavernas serving Cypriot mezze and fresh fish beside the water. Everything is walkable — one of the reasons a stay at Avenue feels less like a hotel and more like living in Kyrenia for a while.
