Girne Castle
A Crusader-era fortress on the edge of Kyrenia's old harbour, a short walk from Avenue Hotel — and home to one of the world's oldest recovered shipwrecks.
Why visit
Girne (Kyrenia) Castle has guarded the mouth of the old harbour for centuries, rebuilt in turn by Byzantines, Lusignans and Venetians. Walking its thick ramparts gives you the best single view in town — the horseshoe harbour on one side, the Mediterranean on the other.
Inside the walls is the Shipwreck Museum, built around a 4th-century BC merchant ship raised from the seabed off Kyrenia — one of the oldest recovered vessels anywhere, still carrying its cargo of amphorae and millstones.

Getting there from Avenue Hotel
The castle sits at the eastern end of the old harbour, about an eight-minute walk from the hotel through the old town. There is no need to drive — the walk along the water is part of the pleasure.
